ERRATUM. Following a mistake in the ranking published yesterday, in which Vasilyev was not shown, Thierry Magnaldi and Francois Borsotto did not take the first stage win, but arrived in second place. Today, some misfortunes resulted on placing the 2WD crew in the fifth place, but the crew is still 2nd in the overall standings.
After an extremely cold night, all competitors of the Africa Race took the special stage from the bivouac. Three kilometers later, they had their first contact with soft sand and some small dunes to cross before playing in a oued where navigators ‘abilities were tested d to get to Merzouga and its famous dunes that are well known by all rally men. In summary, the program of this second stage included dunes, broken and fast roads and acute navigation.

“This morning, we took the start for 370 km. We left the bivouac at 9 am, says Thierry Magnaldi. We took the wrong way, at km 31 we lost the track, and had to go 4 km in one way to get back and start over from the last mark on the road book. We then saw that, until the next waypoint, there were only our marks, so I went fast to take on the time on Vasilyev, but I didn’t make it. The only think that I did was get stuck in a small dune in a closed turn and we lost another 10 minutes…”
The 2WD team is now 2nd overall and this is just the beginning of their adventure in the Africa Eco Race 2017.
